Facebook has surprisingly released a new application, this time making a single, highly appreciated feature almost standalone: Facebook Messenger is born, an app specifically designed for instant messaging, a very popular private communication method.
The functionality is very simple and mirrors that of another well-known application entirely based on messages: WhatsApp.
Therefore, you can send and receive messages in real-time, with subsequent push notifications. It won’t just be text messages but also photos.
When you send a message to one of your contacts, it will be received in two different ways: if the recipient also has a smartphone and the application, they will receive an immediate notification, just like a normal SMS. If they don’t, the message will be delivered to their Facebook inbox, as would happen with an email or a private message.
Currently, Facebook Messenger is available for download on the Android Market and the US App Store, but it’s likely that within a few hours, it will also be downloadable via the Italian App Store. It’s no coincidence that the official Facebook Messenger page in Italian is already available.
Although Facebook Messenger closely resembles WhatsApp, it also has a significant point of divergence: while WhatsApp is paid (albeit at a very popular price), Facebook Messenger is free.
And meanwhile, as users are still beginning to test Facebook’s new mobile product, it’s learned that within the application’s code there are traces of what could be a future development of the app: video calling.
