The Daily on iPad, the first magazine created specifically for Apple’s tablet, has been hacked and is therefore available online on The Daily: Indexed.
Curious individuals residing outside the United States who wished to consult the brand-new The Daily, the newspaper for iPad, will no longer have to wait to flip through the electronic pages of Murdoch’s digital-editorial creation: The Daily on iPad has been hacked and is therefore now available online. Andy Baio is responsible for bringing the pages of The Daily to the web, having set up The Daily: Indexed. It is possible to find (for free) the index and articles from The Daily, though without the advanced functions and bespoke layout available in the original format. However, all the content is present.
The workaround implemented – which isn’t exactly a full-blown hack but conceptually could be very close – was straightforward: the articles from The Daily for iPad are in fact already present online, on the News Corp website. The publishing group had not indexed them, and so Baio, in a matter of minutes (around twenty, as he himself admits), made everything available to everyone: Americans who don’t want to pay the daily 14 cents (99 cents weekly or $39.99 annually), websurfers who don’t have a US iTunes account, or simply lurkers from around the world.
