As part of Sony’s flagship G Master series, it delivers superb image quality right to the super-wide-angle edges at 12 mm with a constant F2.8 aperture, combined with beautiful bokeh effects.
The introduction of the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM expands Sony’s G Master F2.8 lens range to cover 12 mm to 200 mm, providing the world’s widest F2.8 aperture zoom at 12 mm. This focal length allows for emphasizing distance and creating dynamic perspectives beyond the human eye, opening up unprecedented creative possibilities.

The lens features three extremely precise XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements, including the largest XA element ever manufactured for an α (Alpha) lens. These XA elements, along with an additional aspherical element, effectively suppress astigmatism, chromatic aberration, and field curvature just outside the image periphery. Furthermore, three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements combined with two Super ED glass elements ensure effective control of chromatic aberration and work synergistically to produce sharpness from corner to corner, minimizing halos.
A “floating focus” mechanism divides the focus group into two parts that can be controlled independently, a system that effectively ensures optimal close-up performance while maintaining maximum definition at any distance. Additionally, this technology helps maintain a constant minimum focusing distance of 0.28 meters throughout the focal range. With internal focusing, the lens maintains a constant length with minimal shift in its center of gravity, ensuring it remains perfectly balanced in the photographer’s hands.
Sony’s G Master series bokeh characteristics are achieved through precise control of the lens’s spherical aberration characteristics during both design and manufacturing. At the same time, the extreme surface precision of the lens’s XA elements effectively suppresses the onion-ring effect, and in combination with the 9-bladed circular aperture, further enhances the refinement of the bokeh.
The FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM lens utilizes four high-speed, high-thrust original XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors, ensuring compatibility with the speed performance of current and future cameras. With two motors for each focus group, autofocus is fast and precise, and new control algorithms maximize the response of the XD Linear Motor system while ensuring seamless synchronization between the two groups. An additional benefit is extremely quiet operation with minimal vibration.
The FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM features the new Nano AR Coating II for the first time, which allows for more uniform application on larger elements or curved lens surfaces. This coating eliminates internal reflections, minimizes flare and ghosting, resulting in clear, sharp images. Despite the lens’s wide-angle field of view, it maintains optimal definition and contrast throughout the image, even in difficult lighting conditions.
Videomaking
The constant F2.8 maximum aperture across all focal lengths ensures stable exposure even during zoom. This means the shutter speed and ISO sensitivity remain consistent during video recording. The creative options offered by shooting video with a 12 mm field of view and constant F2.8 aperture in full-frame are endless. However, when used on an APS-C camera or with a Super 35 field of view, the maximum focal length becomes equivalent to 18 mm, providing useful magnification options for movie recording.
