The new premium Sony RX0 II is an ultra-compact premium camera, one of the smallest and lightest in the world.

Inheriting the extreme compactness and resistance to water/dust, drops[vii], and shocks[viii] of the RX0, the new model now offers internal 4K Ultra HD recording, a 180° upward and 90° downward tilting LCD screen that even works underwater[ix],ii, as well as new solutions for image stabilization in video shooting.

At the heart of the RX0 II is a 15.3-megapixel 1″ stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS image sensor and an advanced BIONZ X™ image processor, ensuring optimized color reproduction[x] and the ability to reproduce beautiful skin tones. This combination has been enhanced to ensure lightning-fast performance and extraordinary image quality for both photos and videos across a wide ISO range from 80[xi] to 12,800. The ZEISS® Tessar T* 24mm F4.0 wide-angle lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 20 cm, making it ideal for selfies or photos of objects placed on a table.

A camera for all situations

The RX0 II can go where no other camera can. With dimensions of just 59 mm x 40.5 mm x 35 mm[xii] and a weight of only 132 g,[xiii] the RX0 II easily fits in your pocket and is ready to face all elements without fear. It is waterproof[ii] up to a depth of 10 meters and resistant to dust, drops from up to 2 meters, and shocks[viii] with a maximum force of 200 kg.

“During development, the goal of the original RX0 model was to create a camera that offered new forms of creative expression, thanks to its form factor and technical features,” says Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing, Digital Imaging at Sony Europe. “We have refined these features with the new RX0 II and added further functionalities that we believe will make it a camera suitable for any type of travel and that offers comparable performance for photos and videos in numerous shooting situations and vlog recording.”

Video and other features

The RX0 II offers internal 4K Ultra HD 30p[iv] recording with full pixel readout without pixel binning to capture approximately 1.7 times the data required for 4K Ultra HD video. This oversampling reduces the appearance of moirĂ© and jaggies, ensuring smooth, high-quality 4K Ultra HD video with stunning detail and depth. Using Sony’s new “Imaging Edge™” mobile applications, footage can be easily transferred to a smartphone[xiv], edited, and shared on social networks.

The RX0 II introduces built-in electronic stabilization[xv] for stable videos, even when shooting handheld. The function can be further optimized by exporting footage to a smartphone or tablet with the “Movie Edit add-on” application[xvi], which allows processing of additional information captured during shooting to produce video with gimbal-like smoothness.[xvii] A new additional feature accessible via Sony’s “Movie Edit add-on” is “Intelligent Framing,” which keeps the selected subject in the center of the frame and corrects image distortion in the final edit. You can then select the aspect ratio depending on where you want to share the video.

Additional video features of the RX0 II include Super Slow Motion recording at up to 1,000 fps[xviii], uncompressed 4K HDMI output, and simultaneous proxy video recording. Users can utilize Picture Profile, S-Log2, and Time Code / User Bit functions to achieve a result that precisely matches their creative vision.

Precision photography

The versatility of the RX0 II means the camera is capable of offering numerous photographic functions in addition to video. It boasts an anti-distortion shutter of up to 1/32,000 sec. and can shoot at up to 16 fps[v] to capture the most fleeting emotions that cross a subject’s face. Compared to the original RX0, color reproduction has been improved to ensure natural and vibrant skin tones, and an optional Soft Skin Effect can be applied to correct minor blemishes and wrinkles. Rating and protection functions can be applied directly in the camera, and images shot in continuous mode can now be viewed all together.

In the RX0 II, Sony’s Eye AF function, which is highly successful among portrait photographers worldwide, has been improved. The speed, accuracy, and operation of Eye AF have been optimized to simplify the creation of breathtaking portraits: simply half-press the shutter button to lock focus on the subject’s eye. The focused eye can be selected (left/right/auto) in the menu or assigned to a custom button, allowing users to concentrate on composition.

The camera can be set for interval shooting, allowing you to create incredible time-lapse videos[xix] using Sony’s “Imaging Edge” suite desktop application “Viewer.”

Multi-camera options

Using Sony’s “Imaging Edge Mobile”[xx] application, you can wirelessly control up to 5 RX0 II cameras[xxi], and from 6 to 50 cameras via access points (starting summer 2019). The RX0 II is also compatible with the CCB-WD1[xxii] control unit, which allows connecting and controlling up to 100 cameras in a wired multi-camera system. These multi-camera solutions enable innovative shooting opportunities and video expressions from any viewpoint the user wishes to explore.
