Just a few days ago, we discussed the Snapchat privacy security alert, and now unwelcome news arrives: 4 million accounts have been breached.
We covered Snapchat just a handful of days ago: the news that was making headlines was precisely about a security flaw in the application..
Researchers from Gibson Security have indeed announced that they discovered a bug that jeopardizes users’ privacy, as this vulnerability could have been used to steal phone numbers from any user’s contact list.
This is a possibility not at all denied by the Snapchat staff, but rather downplayed and minimized.
And now, rather negative news has emerged in these very hours: over 4 million Snapchat accounts (4.6 million to be precise) have been breached, and all related data has been published online.
The site snapchatdb.info has indeed appeared, on which anyone could download this huge amount of data stolen from Snapchat accounts until recently.
As of this writing, the aforementioned site has been taken down and is no longer accessible: the creator later explained to the site “The Verge” that the action was taken as a demonstration, precisely to pressure the Snapchat staff to fix the flaw. Furthermore, the act was also carried out to make the issue public, thus highlighting its direct material effect.
Those who worked on the site also emphasize that it is still possible for anyone to breach Snapchat’s system again to gather data on a global scale.
Through Snapchat’s official blog, a new post states that an update will be released soon and an email address is provided to report system anomalies.
