New reduced roaming rates from July 1: details

Roaming rates in Europe will change starting Tuesday, July 1, 2014: significant price reductions.

Good news for those interested in using their smartphone, tablet, and mobile phone while abroad: starting today, Tuesday, July 1, 2014, roaming rates see a significant reduction..
The European Union has legislated in this regard, thus requiring mobile phone operators to adjust their price lists, applying lower prices for calls, SMS, and internet browsing.
The process for price reduction will not stop here: further mandatory decreases have already been announced, leading to the complete disappearance of the extra charges incurred when using telephone services outside one’s own country.
The hope of Neelie Kroes, current EU Commissioner for Telecommunications, is to completely abolish roaming costs by the end of 2015.
While waiting for this to happen, the first steps in this direction were taken back in 2007, laying increasingly concrete foundations for the creation of a single European telecommunications market that can bring together all companies in the sector from all member states.
As of today, therefore, there is a -55.5% reduction compared to previous rates for data usage on smartphones, mobile phones, or tablets.
For outgoing calls, rates have been cut by 20%, for incoming calls the reduction is 28%, and finally for SMS, it’s a -25%.

What, then, are the roaming rates in Europe updated as of July 1, 2014??
Here they are in detail:

  • Telephony/Voice:
    outgoing calls: 19 euro cents per minute;
    incoming calls: 5 euro cents per minute;
  • SMS: 6 euro cents;
  • internet browsing: 20 euro cents per megabyte.

All the above prices are exclusive of VAT, so this tax will be added to the rates, at least as far as SIM cards from a mobile phone operator active in the Italian market are concerned.
Furthermore, please note that these are the indications of the maximum spending limits for the aforementioned services, so it could happen that companies may offer lower rates, although this possibility currently seems remote.
The road is still long, but it should be noted that, since 2007, the reduction compared to prices then is around 80/90% today: a great success for consumers.
