Mozilla and Samsung Together for New “Servo” Mobile Browser

Its name is Servo, and it is a new mobile browser that Mozilla and Samsung are working on together.

Mozilla and Samsung have entered into an agreement that sees the two companies working together on the creation of a new browser. Specifically, it will be a browser for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.
Its name – at least for now – is “Servo” and it already has two years of design and development behind it; now Samsung is also joining this initiative, and with its know-how, it will likely be able to give further impetus to the research.
The project aims to provide a stable mobile browser that runs well on the multi-core architectures of the coming years, which by their very nature are heterogeneous and much faster than current ones.
To achieve this, it has been decided to write Servo in Rust: this is a programming language developed by Mozilla, thanks in part to contributions from its community, in an open-source spirit.
Samsung will therefore be able to provide a considerable contribution to continue the development of Rust with the ARM backend, and it is also a company capable of managing Android functionalities well.

The first step will therefore be for Mozilla to strengthen Rust, so that it can then work more comprehensively on the Servo browser.
This suggests that the completed work will not see its final form in the coming weeks: everything is still in the initial design phase, but the arrival of Samsung with a larger team than just the Mozilla staff will certainly be able to give more sprint and new energy to the studies.
