Many already know the meaning of these acronyms, but perhaps it’s useful to offer a summary.
The CRT monitor, Cathode Ray Tube, is the traditional television-type screen that has almost completely disappeared from the IT sector, making way for modern LCD displays. The acronym LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, a panel composed of cells filled with liquid crystal. When molecules are excited by an electrical impulse, they align parallel to the magnetic field produced and, if properly polarized, vary in intensity, allowing more or less light to pass through and thus transforming an electronic signal into an image.

This panel can be of the “transmissive” type when it is backlit or has side lighting, of the “reflective” type if it has a semi-reflective mirror on the back to reflect ambient light, and “transflexive” if it is constructed using both technologies.

The acronym LCD is often accompanied by the acronym TFT, or Thin Film Transistor. This is a very thin film of transistors mounted inside the LCD screen which, by accelerating the transformation speed of the crystal molecules, allows for much brighter and sharper images than those delivered by older LCD screens with simple LED technology. In this case, we are dealing with an “active matrix” monitor. FSTN (Film SuperTwist Nematic) and Dual-Scan are acronyms referring to older passive matrix LCD technology, which is now obsolete.

The OLED, Organic Light-Emitting Diode, is the new frontier for high-definition LCD monitors. Experimentation is in an advanced phase, and OLED screens are already installed on some mobile phones and portable game consoles. OLED panels do not require backlighting because they contain liquid crystals capable of emitting their own light, and they also guarantee extreme brightness, vivid colors, and very low energy consumption.
