Apple is reportedly working on a new iPhone with features distinct from the “classic” series.
As rumors about the likely release of an iPhone Mini and a low-cost iPhone continue, new whispers are emerging, this time concerning potential iPhone models with larger screens.
The news originates from the East, specifically from Apple’s supplier ecosystem, and was reported by the Reuters news agency. The report suggests that the Cupertino-based company is working on a project involving two devices, tentatively named iPhone Mega and iPhablet.
Both are expected to feature extra-large screens and could be ready for release in 2014.
Naturally, there has been no confirmation or even a vague outline from official Apple channels, so this news should be treated purely as rumor.
There are only a few indicators suggesting that the release of products with such large screens is not entirely ruled out, but neither is it imminent.
Tim Cook himself explained some time ago that there is undoubtedly interest in larger displays. However, the compromises required – such as potentially reduced battery life or different resolutions – are not yet acceptable within Apple’s high standards.
While it may be true that Asian suppliers are involved in creating prototypes with screens nearing 6 inches, it is equally true that a solution for adopting such a technical element seems to be some way off.
