iPhone 5 presented: release date, features, and accessories

iPhone 5 has arrived: the new smartphone from Apple has been officially unveiled. Here are its features, accessories, and what’s new. US market prices have also been revealed.

As anticipated, on September 12, 2012 – at 7 PM Italian time – Apple truly presented the new iPhone 5 during the event held at the Yerba Buena Center For Arts in San Francisco.
iPhone 5 features a slightly different design compared to its predecessor but with a very pleasant and apparently resistant aluminum and glass casing.
Still from a design perspective, what also stands out is the lightness associated with its thickness: it is indeed currently the thinnest smartphone in the world, with its 7.6 millimeters for a total of 112 grams.
The screen is a Retina display of 4 inches, with more pixels than the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S (the resolution is indeed 1136 x 640 pixels), therefore it is longer than its predecessors, giving more space to content while maintaining the same width, in order to allow gripping and one-handed use.
Another point to highlight is the speed that characterizes its operations: everything is very fluid and fast, thanks to the ultra-fast wireless standards, including LTE and DC-HSDPA. Apple states that the iPhone 5 offers dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support with wireless speeds up to 150 Mbps.
All this is based on the new Apple A6 chip which improves graphics performance while focusing on energy saving. The CPU doubles the speed, making everything very nimble and quick.
Regarding the camera, we find a redesigned and enhanced 8-megapixel iSight camera: it is now smaller and allows for sharper and cleaner shots, thanks to the new sapphire crystal lens.
The 1.2-megapixel front FaceTime HD camera can be used not only for video calls but also for recording HD video at 720p.
The operating system is iOS6, with an accompanying Siri with support for multiple languages, including Italian.
The “battery”batteryhas also been upgraded to ensure – at least on paper – 224 hours of standby, 10 hours of Wi-Fi use, and 8 hours of 3G (or 4G, where available) network use.
Two colorsare available: the iPhone 5 can be purchased in black and slate or in white and silver.

Therelease of the iPhone 5 in Italywill be on September 28, 2012, but the selling pricein our country will be announced closer to the release date.
As for the prices in the United States, on the other hand, they can be indicated:

  • iPhone 5 16 GB: $199;
  • iPhone 5 32 GB: $299;
  • iPhone 5 64 GB: $399.

It should be noted that the accessoriescurrently used with iPhones will no longer work with the new iPhone 5: the connector, as anticipated, is different. It’s called Lightningand has 19 pins, instead of 30 as on all currently used Apple models.
Therefore, cables and adapters will also be distributed immediately, but at prices that are not at all low: expect $29 for the adapter and $39 for the cable set.
The earphoneshave also undergone a significant redesign, improving greatly: they are called EarPodsand are more comfortable inside the ear canal, as well as more precise and pure in delivering sound.
Changes also in terms of the SIM card which will have to be a nano SIM, even smaller.
We will talk again about iPhone 5 as soon as the Italian sales prices.
