Internet in small towns: what to do

Connectivity is not uniform across Italy. Large cities can boast fast internet and 5G connectivity for mobile. But what if you live and work in small towns?

For years, Italy has debated the digital divide or the lack of high-performance connections in small rural or mountain villages. This issue has not been entirely resolved, as even today, there are hamlets and areas of the beautiful country that are not reached by fiber or traditional fast connections. However, thanks to innovative technologies, even sparsely populated areas can now have these services. How?

Where I come from, we say that “the full don’t believe the hungry,” meaning those who can work and use the internet for gaming or streaming from places large or small are not interested in the small minority who are starved of these services. Many players in the sector have no interest in investing in towns with a sparse population because the ROI would not be adequate. From an investment, it would become a cost for them.

However, fortunately, not all companies whose core business is internet connection are deaf to the call of small towns and places with low population and work density. Among these, I like to recall the case of Eolo, a company that has been supporting small towns for years with Internet offers specifically for this segment of clientele.

The widespread availability of the offer is due to the innovative technology proposed by Eolo: the FWA radio network. Luca Spada, founder of Eolo, stated: Day by day, we have built the largest and most performing FWA radio network in Italy, connecting over 1.2 million people and reaching more than 6,800 municipalities that were previously isolated. We were the first to do it because we ourselves experienced the digital divide and understood the importance of being connected to places, to events, but above all to people. Now that the whole country needs to get back on its feet, we will continue to travel with the same goal: bringing internet where others don’t reach..

The FWA radio network (acronym for Fixed Wireless Access) is nothing more than what is commonly called “the last mile via radio waves,” which, thanks to its technology, can penetrate places where cabling investments are significant compared to the economic return. FWA is a data transmission system that involves the use of a mixed network, partly made up of fiber optic cabling and partly utilizing radio frequencies. It is precisely thanks to this combination that it can reach places where fiber optics would not reach for economic reasons).

The first part of the FWA network is made with fiber optic cables that reach the base radio antenna. The latter is responsible for sending the internet signal wirelessly to the surrounding area, using dedicated radio frequencies. The user accesses it through a specific device that captures and transforms the radio signal into fast internet connectivity.

Therefore, if you live in a small town, the advice is to take advantage of Eolo’s FWA radio network offer for gaming, to follow your favorite series on Netflix o Amazon, to watch your favorite team’s matches on Dazn o Prime, or simply for smart working.
