How is Italy doing on ultra-broadband?
According to the latest report on the state of the internet by Akamai announced a few weeks ago, referring to the end of 2015 (Q4 2015), here is the situation in Italy.
Broadband adoption >4 Mbps
On the broadband adoption front (>4 Mbps), Italy registered the most significant increase in Europe quarter-on-quarter, with +10%. In our country, compared to the same period last year (Q4 2014), broadband connections increased by 29%, reaching 78% of the total connections.
High broadband adoption >10 Mbps
In Italy, on the high broadband adoption front,
high broadband, 14% of connections are above 10Mbps. Here too, and for the period under review (Q4 2015), Italy is the only EMEA country to register the highest growth rate: 50% compared to the previous quarter (Q3 2015) and 142% compared to the same period last year (Q4 2014).
Broadband adoption from 15 Mbps
All EMEA countries included in the study registered growth in connections equal to or greater than 15 Mbps in the quarter under review. Italy leads the rankings with 5.2%, placing 48th globally and 22nd in EMEA, with an increase of 56% compared to the previous quarter (Q3 2015) and 141% compared to the same period last year (Q4 2014).

The first Italian connection on April 30, 1986
On April 30, 1986, Italy connected to the Internet for the first time: the signal, originating from the University Computing Center for Electronic Calculation (CNUCE) in Pisa, arrived at the Roaring Creek station in Pennsylvania. That first connection was the end of a project by a group of pioneers; and it was the beginning of a new story. Thirty years later, from April 29 until night, there will be an Internet Day across Italy: to remember the deeds of those who believed in it first; and to draw all the necessary momentum from it to close the game that began then. Ultra-broadband, digital skills, digital services for everyone: it’s time to accelerate.
