From the Blog Google Webmaster Central we learn about the release of the new version of the software that generates the sitemap. The new tool appears to be able to analyze traffic, logs, and other factors in order to improve performance.
Specifically, the new software refines its capabilities to be more suitable for:
XML Sitemap for web searches based on sitemaps.org standards
Mobile Sitemaps for mobile-friendly websites
Code Search Sitemaps for source code that you make available to users
Furthermore, Google Sitemap Generator pings Google Search Blog to pass new or modified URLs.
