“We, L’Aquila” is Google’s initiative aimed at not forgetting L’Aquila, to preserve collective memory and keep track of the artistic and cultural heritage that would otherwise risk being lost.
Google has not forgotten the earthquake in Abruzzo and presents the project “We, L’Aquila“, a sort of large collective platform to keep the spotlight on the city and to transmit its memories and works that, at present, would be irretrievably lost.
The power of the web means that anyone can actively contribute to the project by providing footage, photos, stories, and anything else that can be useful for creating a virtual map.
There is also a second aspect to the “We, L’Aquila” project: using design tools such as Google SketchUp and Google 3D Warehouse, everyone can virtually reconstruct the city’s historic center as it was before the earthquake.
In this way, efforts will be made to preserve the memory of buildings, businesses, and public spaces that were lost to the community due to the disastrous earthquake of April 6, 2009.
While it is true that every Italian – indeed, any person, anywhere in the world – can contribute to the “We, L’Aquila” project, L’Aquila’s citizens can also act directly: starting this morning, a point has been set up in Piazza Regina Margherita with PCs and web connection. The technological facility will be stationed for 3 months and will allow anyone to follow the project.
