BlackBerry Messenger Voice is the new service announced by RIM for BlackBerry users that allows for free calls. Here’s how it works and its limitations.
Just a few days ago, the release of the new BlackBerry 10 operating system was announced, and today another innovation for owners of RIM devices arrives.
With the update to BlackBerry 7.0, the ability to make free calls is now available, thanks to BlackBerry Messenger Voice.
With the beta version, already downloadable for those using OS 6 (or higher), you can now initiate completely free calls, which must, however, be made exclusively over Wi-Fi, not on 3G or 4G networks.
This is the first limitation – so to speak – of the new service dedicated to BlackBerry users: RIM has indeed decided not to interfere with traffic normally generated through the use of traditional telephone operator services.
Those who wish to test the new functionality can therefore click on the dedicated icon and access the list of contacts available to start a conversation.
In the meantime, during the free calls, you can still chat and check your email, as usual.
The second limitation relates to the fact that there appears to be no possibility of using this service with users on non-BlackBerry devices: in essence, it will not be possible to converse using this feature with iOS, Android, and Windows Phone users.
The innovation will remain available only to BlackBerry users who wish to speak with other BlackBerry users.
The final version of BlackBerry Messenger Voice will likely be available very soon; it is hypothesized that everything could be released from January 30, 2013, that is, simultaneously with the worldwide launch of BlackBerry 10, however, there is still no official confirmation in this regard.
