Advertising is also arriving on Skype: “Conversation Ads” has been presented, the project aimed at advertising revenue and the display of banners and spots to be shown during VoIP conversations.
The novelty has already been officially announced via the Skype blog and is therefore fully confirmed: during video calls, a banner will accompany the interlocutor’s image, showing products and services offered by advertisers.
Skype states that these will be non-intrusive advertising formats: there will be no sudden, uncontrollable banner expansion, nor will jingles or music play to interfere with the ongoing conversation. Everything will be silent and, all in all, discreet.
Specifically, the Conversation Ads mechanism will be activated for users without a subscription or credit, i.e., when using the system to make free calls via Skype.
In this way, Skype will generate revenue, which will compensate for the free use of the service and, at the same time, will give substance to one of the moves made to fuel investments in the advertising sector.

The novelty has already been introduced in 55 countries and, at the moment, only on Microsoft operating systems.
However, it is reasonable to assume that, after an initial testing phase, the presence of advertising banners will also be activated on other devices with different operating systems.
It remains to be seen what the reaction of the average Skype user will be and whether, as declared by the Skype staff, the activation of advertising banners will not interfere with the quality of conversations, causing abrupt disconnections or program closures due to the extra power needed to run the ads.
