The nickel in the iPad could be the cause of an allergic rash in an 11-year-old child.
New forms of allergy – or rather “revisited” in a new light – could affect a growing slice of the population. It has been learned that an 11-year-old child in the United States was diagnosed with a skin rash resulting from the use of a tablet, which in this specific case was an iPad.
Clinical checks carried out by dermatologist Dr. Sharon Jacob of Rady Children’s Hospital, the clinic in San Diego, California, where the young patient was admitted for tests, revealed a correlation between the intensity of the dermatological problem and the use of the device, which had become increasingly frequent in the months preceding hospitalization.
It was established – as reported by the scientific journal “Pediatrics” – that the cause of the skin rash is certainly a nickel allergy.
This metal is indeed present in many everyday objects, including technological ones. Hence the insight to check if the child’s iPad also contained it: after a positive finding, it was concluded that the use of Apple’s tablet was the cause of the current situation.
The boy, in the preceding months, apparently intensified his use of the iPad, and for this reason, his sensitivity to and exposure to nickel would have increased.
The doctors did not ban the iPad for the young patient but recommended its use with an appropriate precaution: simply by applying a Smart Case to the tablet.
The Smart Cover alone would not provide the same protection, so it was decided to opt for the more “enveloping” accessory.
This way, the situation was remedied, keeping in mind that the primary cause was, and is, the nickel allergy.
After all, this component is not only present in food and cosmetics but also in a myriad of everyday objects, especially technological ones.
Apple – specifically mentioned in this case – has not yet released any statement on this matter, which, however, could equally affect other manufacturers.
