RIM’s tablet, the “BlackBerry PlayBook”, is arriving on the Italian market: RIM itself has officially announced it, promising waiting times of no more than approximately 30 days. Therefore, by July, the BlackBerry PlayBook will be on sale.
It’s been just under a year since we announced on the pages of FullPress the upcoming release of the BlackBerry PlayBook, RIM’s tablet geared towards business but also suitable for leisure activities for consumer-level users.
We’re returning to this new device because there’s news regarding the release date: an official statement released by RIM itself informs us that the BlackBerry PlayBook will arrive in Italian stores within a month, within the next 30 days.
This “privilege” is not reserved solely for our country but also for the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, and Germany, concerning European releases. Asian countries are also included in the schedule, totaling 16 nations involved in the operation.
If confirmed, the price of the BlackBerry PlayBook – the 16 GB version, thus the base model – should be around 499 euros. The 32 GB version might cost 599 euros, while the “top” 64 GB model would be 699 euros. These are approximate indications, not based on any official confirmation from the company but estimated based on prices charged in the United States, where the tablet has been on sale for some time.
Will RIM’s tablet become the fiercest competitor to the undisputed iPad? Perhaps in the short term, yes, at least until HP’s tablet, which also promises to be well-equipped, is released. The other variable depends on the target audience: if it only expands into the business sector, it obviously cannot compete with Apple’s tablet.
It’s still too early to make comparisons, but certainly, the PlayBook will not conceptually deviate from its illustrious BlackBerry sibling.
Despite having its own proprietary operating system, the tablet will be able to interact with Android applications; for all other technical specifications of the BlackBerry PlayBook, we refer you to the article published on FullPress in September 2010, where you can also view a presentation video.
