Nokia’s Ovi Music Unlimited is coming to an end: the company has decided to suspend the service, which will remain active in a handful of countries for a few more months.
Nokia has officially announced that new registrations for the Ovi Music Unlimited service will close in 27 countries. This decision appears to have been made due to poor results. Ovi Music Unlimited is Nokia’s service that allows users to download music legally and without limits, through a free subscription with Come With Music.
The intention was for Nokia Ovi Musc Unlimited to be the largest and most formidable competitor to the giant iTunes, but in its three years of existence, the results seem to have been unsatisfactory.
The service, therefore, is closing but will remain active in some countries (for example, Brazil, China, and Indonesia) but not in Italy. However, existing subscribers can continue to use Ovi Music Unlimited until their contract naturally expires. For all new potential customers, the service will no longer be available, as Nokia itself will no longer launch mobile phones “bundled” with Ovi Music Unlimited and Come With Music, as was the case with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic model.
An internal source at Nokia made a concise comment, highlighting one of the probable reasons that prevented Ovi Music Unlimited from progressing: “The markets want a DRM-free music service”.
However, this is not the end of Nokia’s music service altogether, because, as stated in official communications, “we are studying new music and entertainment services for 2011 together with our partner network”.
