Foodinho, the online service with home delivery of lunch, dinner, and aperitifs in Milan, in under an hour, is being acquired by the Spanish company Glovo to expand into Italy.
In recent years, home delivery services for food and drinks, as well as complete meals, have increased dramatically. The intense web competition on mobile devices has claimed several victims but has also rewarded several corporations.Â
Foodinho, a home delivery service for lunch and dinner in Milan, is not giving up but is becoming part of Glovo, a Spanish company operating in the same sector. Corporations unable to withstand the brunt of competition are followed by others that consolidate through acquisitions, effectively opening new markets. This is precisely the case for Glovo, which through Foodinho is landing in Italy, specifically in Milan.
Glovo, in truth, is not a long-established company but a startup. After all, in an innovative market like the one segmented by Glovo and Foodinho, the past is ancient history. However, the Spanish company based in Barcelona preferred to enter the Italian market, where food excellence abounds, by acquiring a company already operating in the same sector. Matteo Pichi, founder of Foodinho, becomes Country Manager for Italy.
That Italy is a great market is also confirmed by the co-founder and CEO of Glovo, Oscar Pierre, who also states: “Until now, Foodinho has focused on food delivery, but, as you know, our vision goes beyond that, aiming to be the leading integrated mobile marketplace with deliveries in under an hour.”
Glovo is also active in other Spanish cities besides Barcelona, specifically: Madrid and Valencia. In Italy, however, it will not only serve customers looking for food, as Foodinho has done until now, but will offer a much broader service with deliveries of any product, including non-food items, in under an hour.
