Sharp announces that its Plasmacluster Ion technology is effective in combating coronavirus particles.
The world-leading technology company has demonstrated, first in the world, the effectiveness of Plasmacluster technology against SARS-CoV-2 in airborne droplets.
“Disinfectants, such as alcohol and detergents, are widely recognized as effective in reducing the presence of viruses on surfaces. However, there are few effective countermeasures for airborne contamination, such as wearing a mask. Effective inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 in airborne droplets has been demonstrated thanks to Plasmacluster technology. It is expected to be useful in reducing the risk of infection in places such as offices, apartments, healthcare facilities, and vehicles.” This was commented by Dr. Jiro Yasuda, Professor at the National Research Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases, Institute of Tropical Medicine at Nagasaki University.
After approximately 30 seconds, a reduction of about 90% in viral particles was observed. The laboratory study was conducted in collaboration with the National Research Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases, Institute of Tropical Medicine at Nagasaki University, by experts from the Department of Microbiology at Shimane University, and by members of the Japanese Society for Virology. Nagasaki University, in particular, is an internationally recognized authority in the field of infectious disease research.Â
The “Coronavirus Disease 2019” (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), was officially detected for the first time in December 2019. By October 2020, over 37 million people worldwide had been infected with the virus, and approximately one million had died. The pandemic presents a significant challenge to society and requires countermeasures to be implemented across many sectors.
