Although recently legalized in our country, online gambling has generated and continues to generate much discussion. On one hand, there are those who argue it was a wise move because, not only has it allowed Italians to play legally and safely, but the resulting taxes are also an excellent resource for state coffers. Before legalization, in fact, gamblers played nonetheless by accessing foreign online casinos, which were not taxed by the state and therefore generated no fiscal revenue.
On the other hand, many are convinced that this move has exposed all Italians with internet access to the risk of ludopathy, the disease of gambling addiction, and that the resulting social costs outweigh the state revenue.
While there is little to say on the first point, the second is much more difficult to support and verify. In fact, there are many factors to consider, and quite a few people are convinced this is not true. Supporting their thesis are studies demonstrating that those most at risk of ludopathy are actually players of real, classic slot machines, due to the psychological connection created between pressing the button and starting the machine, which fosters the illusion of being able to influence the final outcome. Those who play online, however, are not surrounded by sounds and an environment specifically designed to encourage continuous betting. Instead, they are often at home or on the go, surrounded by constant distractions, making it much easier to stop playing at any time.
