Nintendo Wii U: 5 GB update on first boot

The new Nintendo Wii U console leaves new buyers waiting for a substantial 5 GB update. Here’s the situation.

Sales of Nintendo Wii U, the Japanese company’s new console, have already begun in the United States and, while awaiting its arrival in Italian and European stores, the first user impressions are starting to come in from overseas.
The first complaint being widely discussed refers to a mandatory update that must be performed on the first boot of Nintendo Wii U.
Although the company had previously announced that some components would need to be downloaded, buyers did not expect such a large amount of data to download.
In fact, it is a 5 GB update required at startup, with waiting times ranging from about an hour to almost 5 hours, depending on the type of connection used and the download speed available on your network.
To this timing, another 30 minutes for installation must be added.
In some cases, furthermore, specific difficulties have occurred: on some consoles the update stalled, leading some users to believe they could turn off the device to try to restart the download. However, this rendered the Wii U completely unusable, requiring a call to Nintendo’s customer service.

The mandatory update to start using Nintendo Wii U is essentially for transferring data from Wii to Wii U; moreover, this preliminary download is also necessary to access the Miiverse service.
However, potential European buyers should not despair: it is likely that Nintendo Wii U will be launched on our continent with Miiverse, backward compatibility, and other necessary features for smooth operation already included, thus without the need for such a substantial update.
The release of Nintendo Wii U in Europe, it is worth remembering, is scheduled for November 30th.
