Microsoft Surface, officially launched tablet

**Microsoft Surface** is the new tablet coming from the Redmond labs: while nothing is known about the price yet, its features can already be discussed.

Exactly as anticipated yesterday, Microsoft has presented its first tablet: it is called Surface and it was preceded by an announcement in which Microsoft showed it is placing great emphasis on this product.
Surface will be distributed in two versions: one will be mainly dedicated to the consumer market, suitable for everyone; the other will be a Pro version, designed for more demanding users and therefore more powerful.
In any case, Surface will feature a 10.6-inch screen made with Gorilla Glass, with a magnesium frame and casing.
The total weight is 576 grams for the base version, a few more grams for the Pro, but in both cases the maximum thickness will be 9.3 millimeters.
From an aesthetic point of view, great attention has been given to design while also paying special attention to functionality, and thus Surface surprises with the presence of an element placed on the back (but perfectly integrated with the casing itself) which – when opened – becomes a solid stand to place the tablet on the table, like a leg for a frame.
In this way, there will be no need for extra stands or supports to purchase: everything will be natively integrated into Surface.
Another surprising element is the option to choose one of the colored covers made of magnetic material. So far this may seem no different from Apple’s iPad covers, but the real innovation lies in the fact that these special covers are actually also usable as a portable multitouch keyboard, complete with integrated trackpad.
Regarding the other technical specifications, here is a summary of the two Surface versions:

  • Surface RT (base model): Windows RT operating system; ARM processor produced by nVidia; internal memory of 32 or 64 GB; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
  • Surface PRO: Windows 8 operating system; Intel Core processor; 64 or 128 GB internal memory; 1 USB 3.0 port.

It is not possible to establish a selling price, as Microsoft executives have not made any mention of it, but what has been learned is that theSurface RT tablet will be marketed at a competitive price compared to its main competitors.
Understandably, thePRO version will have a higher price, also because, more than in the tablet sector, it seems this device has a foot in the ultrabook sector as well, at least in terms of ambition.
A possible launch date is also unknown, but it is thought that these tablets will reach stores worldwide shortly after the official presentation of the Windows 8 operating system.
