Mickey Mouse on iPad: Comics Arrive on Tablets

Even Mickey Mouse loves the iPad: a new story specifically designed for the Apple tablet arrives in digital format, for fans of Disney comics and the curious.

Comics on iPad are editorial products that could achieve significant results. To kick off this type of distribution in our country is “The Walt Disney Company Italia,” which has decided to launch, alongside the usual weekly newsstand release, a special edition of Mickey Mouse for iPad.
The story recounts the great success that the iPap – this is the “duck-speak” name chosen to represent the iPad – is having in Duckburg, with the widespread adoption of “appap” (apps realistically downloadable via iTunes) and the tablet itself.
A new channel is thus opening up for the “Mickey Mouse” comic, providing a space for that segment of readers who seem more accustomed to technology than to paper. Digital natives are indeed highly inclined towards this type of consumption; however, the publisher does not intend to abandon the good old traditional paper format.
Director Valentina De Poli explains to Ansa that “our target audience is digital natives, young people who learned to read in front of a screen, those who click instead of turning a page, and it is precisely with them in mind that we need to transform the magazine and adapt it to new media.”
Almost 80 years after Mickey Mouse’s first appearance in Italian newsstands (the year was 1932), Disney comic characters are thus making the big leap into multimedia, appearing on the screens of iPad tablets, especially since the format is perfectly compatible with Apple’s device screen.
This is not a one-off release: from this month onwards, Mickey Mouse will be regularly released in both paper and digital formats.
