Not all students who pass their high school final exams wish to go to university or – and this is very common – they don’t yet know which field of study suits them best. This situation is common for both young people who attended high schools and graduates of technical institutes, for whom approaching the world of work (and academia) tends to be extremely complex. It is a transition phase full of uncertainties, certainly exciting, but at the same time delicate.

A solution to decide consciously and at the same time rewardingly is to opt for post-diploma professional courses useful for acquiring additional skills to work in your field of reference. These paths do not replace academic ones – attending university can be essential for certain jobs to further specialize – but they allow you to test yourself practically while continuing to study.

What to do after graduation for those who attended high school

The roles you can access once you have passed the long-awaited final exam are diverse and vary depending on the school you attended, as well as in relation to the person’s aspirations and aptitudes. For example, a natural progression for someone who attended a classical high school is to continue studying Italian, Greek, or subjects related to cultural heritage, journalism, and so on. To specialize in these areas, the best thing to do is to combine post-diploma professional courses with a university path.

Those who attended a scientific high school will have a stronger foundation to engage in subjects such as architecture, engineering, medicine, pharmacy, etc. etc. Here too, the ideal is to attend university and post-diploma courses in parallel, in order to have 360° skills.
Those who graduated from a language high school will inevitably need to refine their language skills. Among the careers that may be interesting to pursue are those in interpretation and translation, tourism, and marketing. In all these cases, it is advisable to undertake a training course abroad, in order to optimally improve language proficiency and fluency.

What to do after graduation for those who attended a technical institute

For those who attended technical institutes, it is certainly more immediate to enter the world of work. Even in this case, further specialization is extremely useful for developing further career opportunities. Graduates in administrative fields can apply for positions such as accountant, market analyst, financial advisor, and in marketing. Those who have instead obtained a diploma from atechnical tourism institute have opportunities such as tour guide, event management, front office agent at various facilities in the Ho.Re.Ca. sector: refining language proficiency is aplus of no small importance.

Then there arestudents from technical mechanical institutes. In addition to applying for mechanic and technician roles, a good solution is to specialize further. The most suitable university faculties in themselves are environmental, mechanical, and electronic engineering.

Final Note

What we have offered are just food for thought on how to proceed when it comes to understanding what to do after high school. Specific professional courses offer considerable potential both for entering the world of work and for continuing one’s university studies. Nothing prevents, of course, from pursuing a career different from the one started during high school, provided that one undertakes training in line with one’s aspirations and needs.
