The new LeggoIBS e-reader is available on IBS, available for pre-order starting today and shipping from January 20, 2011. LeggoIBS is equipped with an integrated SIM card, the costs of which are covered by IBS, enabling free Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. This allows readers to access the IBS ebook catalog for free, which currently boasts around 5,000 titles in Italian. The offering is set to grow, considering that works from publishers such as Longanesi, Garzanti, Feltrinelli, Giunti, Newton Compton Mondadori, Einaudi, Sperling, and Piemme are about to be added to the catalog. Small publishing houses will also provide ebooks for LeggoIBS, as emphasized by Mauro Zerbini, CEO of IBS.IT.
The LeggoIBS e-reader also supports non-proprietary formats, meaning readers can open files downloaded from sources other than IBS. Specifically, LeggoIBS supports PDF (including Adobe DRM), Epub (including Adobe DRM), FB2, TXT, DJVU, RTF, HTML, CHM, DOC, TCR, and FB2.ZIP. It can also open images in JPEG, BMP, PNG, and TIFF formats. For audio formats, only MP3 files can be loaded and opened. IBS’s ebook reader allows the use of headphones and is also equipped with 2 integrated 0.5-watt speakers.
The LeggoIBS touchscreen display is a 6” e-ink display and can be used with a dedicated stylus. LeggoIBS also features a voice synthesis system, enabling text-to-speech reading in Italian, English, French, and German.
The technical specifications for LeggoIBS estimate a battery life equivalent to approximately 14,000 page turns. The internal memory is 2 GB, which translates to the ability to store around 1,500 ebooks. The device supports Micro SD cards up to 32 GB.
Finally, LeggoIBS is equipped with a calendar, clock, note-taking, bookmarking features, and an option to customize font size.
The LeggoIBS e-reader is currently on sale at a launch price of 199 euros.
