XXX Domain for Porn Sites: Approval Near

The porn industry is very close to obtaining the clearance of a dedicated domain: xxx. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers appears to be about to give the green light for the registration of .xxx domains, which will unequivocally host adult content.

The story of .xxx domains began in 2007, after a specific request from ICM Registry, a company intending to register a specific adult site with the triple X. Only today has the battle been won, albeit amidst perplexity from parts of the porn industry.
While on one hand, the regulation of online porn and prompt acknowledgment of pornographic sites is hoped for and is factually moving towards it, on the other hand, there are those who fear a sort of “ghettoization” that – over time – would lead to losses for the sector.
However, the possibility of registering a .xxx site does not imply it’s mandatory, so some operators in the porn market have already stated they do not intend to switch to .xxx.
The reason is quickly explained: most likely, .xxx domains will be banned by network administrators, effectively vetoing access to such sites. A much more common “.com” would avoid these inconveniences, at least in the short term.
The opposite could also happen: .xxx sites registered by those who do not intend to host pornographic content but who could benefit from site traffic simply due to the triple X in the web address.
What is certain is that the market for .xxx domains could be particularly flourishing, given the current figures: to date, there are approximately 370 million existing porn sites.
