Tutorial to create a recipe book with Word, using style menus. A small project in a few steps to easily catalog your own recipes.

Here’s how to create a recipe book and format it with Word

  • Surely you already know that to modify the appearance of text we can use the Bold, Italic, and Underline modifiers, the easiest to apply since they are very common and clearly visible in the Word toolbar. Text alignment is managed in the same way.

  • However, this is not the best way to proceed, especially if we need to create repetitive documents: each time it will be necessary to manually apply the modifiers one by one, risking forgetting some. To create our recipe book, we will therefore create styles, so that we can quickly reuse the established settings.

  • Let’s start preparing the styles for our recipe book right away. From the Format menu, choose Style to call up the dialog window shown in the figure. In the Show dropdown menu, select User-defined styles and click New.

  • In the dialog that appears, immediately assign the name “Recipe Book Title” to the new style in the appropriate box. Regarding the style type, leave Paragraph selected and click the Format button. From the menu that appears, choose the Paragraph command. The dialog that appears allows you to set text alignment, indents, spacing, and line spacing.

  • Now let’s color our button: select the largest shape with the object selector, and in the first tab of the Tool Options, press the properties button. Set the stroke to zero. Check that no texture is active and apply a gradient fill.

Ricettario 5

  • In the first tab, select centered alignment from the dropdown menu and move to the text distribution options tab. In this tab, it is possible to activate some controls such as checking for isolated lines and attaching a paragraph to the next. For our title, you need to activate the Don’t hyphenate check.

Ricettario 6

  • Press OK and click the Format button again, this time selecting Font. In this window, choose a font according to your taste suitable for making the title of a recipe book, set it to bold, and assign size 22. In this case, the choice to activate any text effects is at your discretion.

Ricettario 7

  • Press OK and create a new style, which we’ll call Recipe Book Ingredients. Repeat the same operations, this time setting the left indent to 0.5 in the paragraph window. In the font window, choose an easy-to-read sans-serif font, apply italic effect, and click OK.

Ricettario 8

  • Create one last style, which we’ll call Recipe Book Text. For the next paragraph style, set Recipe Book Title, open the font options window and choose the font. Again, you can choose your preferred one; a piece of advice we give is to try to maintain a consistent look among the various styles.

Ricettario 9

  • Now let’s start writing our first recipe without worrying about formatting. When finished, select the first line with the title and from the dropdown menu on the toolbar activate the Recipe Book Title style. Then select the ingredients and activate the appropriate style, and do the same with the text.

Ricettario 10

  • Place the mouse cursor at the end of the last line and press Enter: as you can see, we have set Word so that the next paragraph, that of the recipe preparation text, starts so you begin with a new title. If you want to go to a new line while writing text, just press SHIFT.

Ricettario 11

  • Now let’s personalize our recipe book: we can embellish it with borders and backgrounds. Create a text box, select the entire recipe, and drag it inside the box. From the Format menu, open the Borders and Shading dialog. Assign the recipe a three-dimensional border of 4-point thickness, triple style on all sides, and color it brown.

Ricettario 12

  • Now select the title and click the border tool present in the toolbar. This will create a border along the bottom of the title. Repeat the same operation for the ingredients section and for the preparation section.

Ricettario 13

  • Double-click the border of the text box to open the dialog that defines its properties. In the Colors and Lines tab, click the Fill menu and choose fill effects. Choose a pattern according to your tastes in a very light color and click OK on both windows.

Ricettario 14

  • Done, our recipe book is finally ready! If you prefer, you can also save this created file as a template so that whenever you need to create new recipe sheets, just select New from the File menu and our template will be available in the Word documents list.
