In the hope of finding a valid alternative to Google which made many changes in 2010 to break the monopoly that the Mountain View company has held for a decade among search engines, Josh McCoy of SearchEngineWatch.com has outlined a list of SEO factors which, in his opinion, should be considered during 2011.
McCoy writes that essentially, to understand what to do in 2011, it is enough to read between the coded messages that Google periodically sends. In particular, one must consider the tools provided by Big G such as Google Webmaster Tools, Â Google Analytics and the SERP.
- Links to your site (Google Webmaster Tools)
Last year Google implemented this feature. For some time now, it has been possible to see which contents get the most clicks, which keywords are most important, how all this data is connected. What does this mean? Thanks to this tool, it is understood that Google considers not only the homepage but also the internal pages of a site. These latter pages, therefore, must be taken into consideration and especially linked to each other with relevant anchor text. - CTR in search queries (Google Webmaster Tools)
Google has implemented this section and seems to say: we look at who clicks in the SERP. The content, therefore, must be absolutely attractive and relevant to the title and description which alone are no longer enough. - Image Sitemap (Google Webmaster Tools)
Google now allows submitting a Sitemap for images, a sign that Google places much more importance on images, especially those related to local searches. - In-Page Analytics (Google Analytics)
Google has improved the site’s Overlay functionality within Google Analytics. This could indicate that Google also gives importance to internal site links in addition to those coming from the search pages of its own engine. - Google gives importance to localization
In 2010, we witnessed a real revolution in this regard. Google Places, in its new version launched in the autumn of 2010, clearly conveyed Google’s intentions: to give much importance to local results. Therefore, if your site is present in a specific location, try to optimize it according to this vision. The site’s content must be localized in order to provide targeted information to the reader and the engine. - Social networks
Beyond what Google and Bing consider within social networks (a much debated topic), it is good practice to create a social network within the social platforms, especially Twitter and Facebook. Choose carefully the people to follow on Twitter, write meaningful posts on Facebook in order to attract attention and achieve a good viral message with many “Likes”. - Giving value to Bing
Bing is not a new search engine. However, now that it is present in Yahoo!, it is good practice to check that your sites are indexed. Bing could represent a novelty in 2011 and has good potential to gain new market shares within search engines. - A dive into the recent past, 2009
Take a dive into the recent past (2009). There might be some novelties related to that period that are not yet fully exploited. Just think of the rich snippet, well regarded by Google and still underestimated. It could yield better results in the SERPs.
