How to Recognize and Avoid Cybersecurity Threats

Generally known as viruses, threats to computer systems, whether simple ones affecting a PC or notebook, or complex ones targeting large systems, are an everyday occurrence.

However, security threats are not just about virus propagation but also much more. What unites “cyber threats” are disguise, manipulation, and constant evolution with the aim of harassing, stealing, and damaging. To address these issues, solutions are created by companies in the sector, such as Bitdefender, which owe their success to constant updates and research.

Most Known Cybersecurity Threats

Computer Viruses

Computer viruses are certainly the best-known threats, so much so that they are often generically referred to even when the issue is malware or other situations. A computer virus functions more or less like one that affects humans. Some viruses cause less damage, while others, like a true “coronavirus,” bring about changes in the recipient with severe consequences.

Therefore, the advice is not to use PCs, notebooks, and various devices without adequate protection. Continuing the analogy with coronaviruses, one could say that antivirus software is akin to a vaccine. There are many types of antivirus, just like COVID vaccines, some of which use the same system even if produced by different providers. And just like vaccines, antivirus software must be continuously updated and adapted to the different “mutations” caused by the manipulations, in this case, of malicious actors.

Windows has its own security system for PCs, but it’s not always enough. This is why the recommendation is to purchase an antivirus (free ones are often too limited) or anti-malware solutions, which are often available at good prices.

Spyware

Very widespread, although often confused with viruses, are spyware, which daily threaten our PCs. Besides monitoring our activities, they install programs without our consent. Often, spyware hides behind free software, even when disclosed in the terms of acceptance. This is why it’s good practice to read the “Terms and Conditions” before unreservedly accepting what you are downloading.

In this case too, there are various software available on the market to address these potential vulnerabilities. Purchasing is always recommended.

Hackers and Crackers

Beyond viruses and spyware, cyber threats also take on a human face. This is the case with hackers and crackers, people rather than software, who daily create cybersecurity threats and malware. Hackers and predators are programmers who victimize others for their own gain by penetrating computer systems to steal, modify, or destroy information as a form of cyber-terrorism. These online predators can compromise credit card information, lock data, and steal your identity. As you might have guessed, online security tools with identity theft protection are one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from this type of cybercriminal.

Phishing

Phishing targets well-known or less well-known brands. Masquerading as a trustworthy person or company, phishers attempt to steal financial or personal information through fraudulent emails or instant messages. Phishing attacks are among the most successful methods for cybercriminals seeking to achieve a data breach. Here too, software developed by cybersecurity players comes into play.

Paying attention, taking action, and preventing are the fundamental rules for combating the daily vulnerabilities that affect computer systems.
