Outbrain, one of the leading open web recommendation platforms, announces the release of QualityRating™, one of the most significant algorithm updates in the company’s history.

QualityRating will become part of Outbrain’s existing algorithm to enhance personalized feed experiences that inspire content discovery. Today these recommendation feeds reach more than 1 billion users consuming content across over 7,000 websites, apps, and devices powered by Outbrain.

Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, each promoted ad will go through a real-time quality assessment process. This assessment will then be used by Outbrain’s recommendation engine to improve the personalized feed experience, tailored to each user. Advertisers who implement Outbrain’s quality guidelines will see improved performance on the platform, benefiting from broader reach and connecting with a more diverse audience.

“Outbrain has always built its technology by putting the user at the center of the entire process. When we serve content, our goal is to be relevant to a diverse set of people who have a wide variety of interests. It’s a huge opportunity for us to have more truly engaged users rather than just more engagement,” said Yaron Galai, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Outbrain. “Publishers work hard to maintain a high standard for their content, and by implementing QualityRating for advertisers, we will ensure we create the best user experience for their readers, while optimizing ROAS for those who invest.”

Outbrain will begin testing QualityRating gradually in the second half of 2021 to allow all stakeholders ample time to adapt to a full rollout in 2022. The implementation of QualityRating is a testament to Outbrain’s long-standing commitment to delivering meaningful recommendations for consumers.

“By combining our deep understanding of context and engagement, from the analysis of over 1 billion data points per minute, with QualityRating we will create an extremely powerful personalized feed experience”, he added Andraz Tori, Head of Recommendations Technology, Outbrain. “The new metric will allow us to surface new recommendations that are better suited to consumer preferences”.
