With the α6400, many of the advanced technologies found in Sony’s acclaimed full-frame camera range are brought to a compact APS-C sensor camera. Featuring the world’s fastest AF acquisition speed of 0.02 seconds, this new camera also introduces the groundbreaking ‘Real-time Eye AF’ and ‘Real-time Tracking’ features. Additionally, it boasts high-speed continuous shooting up to 11 fps with AF/AE tracking, a next-generation BIONZ X image processor for excellent image quality, 4K video recording capabilities, a 180° tilting LCD touch screen, and much more. It’s an indispensable tool for all digital content creators, from professionals to vloggers.

Fast Performance to Capture the Perfect Moment

The incredible AF system of the new α6400 inherits many of its technologies from Sony’s latest full-frame camera range, including the α9, α7R III, and α7 III models. The new camera features 425 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points, densely positioned across the entire image area with approximately 84% coverage. The high-speed, high-performance AF tracking system, combined with a next-generation BIONZ X image processor, allows the camera to achieve focus in just 0.02 seconds and maintain subject lock extremely effectively, making it easy to track and capture fast-moving subjects.

The α6400 introduces the advanced ‘Real-time Eye AF’ feature, the latest iteration of Sony’s acclaimed Eye AF technology. This incredible new feature uses AI-based recognition to detect and process visual data in real-time, delivering superior accuracy, speed, and Eye AF tracking performance. In all autofocus modes, the camera now automatically detects the subject’s eyes and allows Eye AF activation with a partial press of the shutter button. In AF-C or AF-A modes, you can choose the preferred eye (left or right) as the focus point. The available options include Auto / Right Eye / Left Eye, and a Switch Right / Left Eye function can be assigned to a custom profile. Thanks to this new technology, photographers can fully concentrate on composition, confident that the focus will remain constantly fixed on the subject’s eye. A component supporting Eye AF for animals, ideal for wildlife photographers, will be integrated in summer 2019 via a system software update.

Another innovation, debuting on the α6400, is Sony’s newly developed ‘Real-time Tracking’ feature. This mode utilizes Sony’s latest-generation algorithm and AI-based object recognition to process color, subject distance (depth), and pattern (brightness) as spatial information, ensuring all subjects are captured with excellent precision. Furthermore, when shooting photos and videos of people and animals, face and eye position information is recognized by AI, and the subject’s eye is tracked in real-time with maximum tracking accuracy. This feature can be activated by partially pressing the shutter button or assigned to a custom profile.

In terms of overall shooting speed, the new camera can shoot at 11 fps with full AF/AE tracking using a mechanical shutter, and up to 8 fps with full AF/AE tracking in “Silent Shooting” mode. At both speeds, it can capture up to 116 JPEG Standard frames / 46 Compressed RAW frames, significantly increasing the chances of capturing the perfect moment.

Overall Image Quality Improvements

Sony’s new α6400 camera features a 24.2 MP APS-C image sensor that works in conjunction with an advanced BIONZ X processor to deliver significantly superior image quality and color reproduction in all shooting conditions. The standard ISO range goes up to ISO 32000 for both stills and movies, and is expandable to ISO 102400 for photos, with excellent noise reduction at medium and high sensitivities.

The camera also inherits many of the image processing algorithms from Sony’s latest full-frame cameras, which provide remarkable noise suppression while preserving resolution and improving texture rendition.

High-Resolution 4K Video Recording with Fast Hybrid Autofocus

The versatile α6400 also proves to be an extraordinary video camera, thanks to its internal 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) recording capability with full pixel readout, without pixel binning, capturing up to 2.4 times the amount of data required for 4K movies. This data is then oversampled to produce high-quality 4K videos with spectacular detail and depth. Focusing during video recording is fast and stable, thanks to improvements in Fast Hybrid AF technology, which keeps the subject in focus regardless of the scene, even if an object crosses the frame. This advanced focusing functionality, combined with Touch Focus, makes the camera an ideal solution for vloggers and video creators who share their footage online.

For time-lapse video recording, the new camera features a built-in interval shooting function, with intervals selectable from 1 to 60 seconds, and a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. During interval shooting, AE tracking sensitivity can be set to “High,” “Mid,” or “Low” to limit exposure variations within the shooting interval.

Furthermore, for the first time ever in a Sony APS-C mirrorless camera, this new model includes an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile that supports Instant HDR workflow and allows for the playback of beautiful, realistic images in 4K HDR format on compatible HDR TVs (HLG). S-Log2 and S-Log3 formats are also available for greater color grading flexibility, along with Zebra, Gamma Display Assist, and Proxy recording features. Among the camera’s other features is Full HD 120 fps recording at up to 100 Mbps, which allows for reviewing and editing footage, creating 4x or 5x slow-motion video files in Full HD resolution with AF tracking.

Optimized for Maximum Versatility

The new camera is designed to offer a high level of functionality and customization, providing maximum creative freedom. A brand-new feature of the α6400 is the 3-inch LCD screen, which tilts 180° and has a resolution of 921,000 dots, allowing for easy and effective framing of selfies for photos and videos. Using this function, vloggers can check and monitor their composition throughout the entire creative process. The LCD screen also offers touch functionality, with the following options: Touch Pad, Touch Focus, Touch Shutter, and the new Touch Tracking, which quickly activates real-time tracking via the touch screen.

The camera is equipped with a high-quality XGA OLED Tru-finder™ viewfinder, extensive customization options with 89 functions assignable to 8 custom buttons, a new My Dial function and My Menu, an overall more functional menu system, a help screen for menus, a star-based image rating system, and many other features that provide a perfect user experience. Constructed from a robust magnesium alloy, the camera is dust and moisture resistant and features an extremely durable shutter, tested for 200,000 cycles. When connected to the brand-new “Imaging Edge Mobile” app, the camera allows for immediate transfer of files to smartphones or tablets.
