Hanx Writer: App Brings Typewriter to iPad

The iPad becomes a typewriter, thanks to the Hanx Writer app: here’s how it works.

It might have been the “excellent testimonial” or perhaps that vintage charm it carries, but the fact is that the Hanx Writer app experienced a download boom within hours on the App Store.

The developer behind this app is indeed a well-known face in world cinema: it was Tom Hanks who conceptualized and developed the application, with the subsequent and crucial contribution of the software house Hitcents.

Hanx Writer brings the keyboard of a typewriter to the iPad display, and it does so not only from a graphical perspective but, above all, from an auditory one.

With Hanx Writer, each tap on a letter will produce the sound typically made by typewriter keys. Not only that: at the end of each line, you’ll hear the nostalgic “bell” that signaled typists to go to the next line by moving the carriage.

Nothing revolutionary, yet the idea was so well-received that it propelled the app to the top of the App Store charts.

This was enough to further boost this project: future updates, both free and paid, are coming soon.

More keyboard models will be added to choose from; for now, there are only three: the free version offers a Prime Select, while paid downloads include a Golden Touch and/or a 707.

And who knows, maybe we can hope that the development team will soon decide to launch it in Europe as well. The application is currently only available for US users and, as already mentioned, only on iPad screens.
