Very soon, sites with top-level domains of the type “.Rome”, “.srl”, “.Ferrari” and so on will be born: a revolution in sight.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has officially announced a substantial and interesting innovation: approximately 1,000 new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) have been added to its registry.
New websites will therefore be able to choose the extension after the famous “dot”, specifically distinguishing themselves by commercial sector, corporate form, city of origin, or actual brand.
For example, it will be possible to register a new site for one’s company by naming it “www.XYZ.srl” or one could consider registering a “www.XYZ.hotel” if managing a hotel.
The list of new domains also includes extensions such as “.pizza” or .sport” and does not lack globally famous brand names.
In Italy, some companies have already proceeded to reserve their domain, such as brands from the Fiat group: the various “.ferrari”, “.iveco”, “.alfaromeo” and so on are indeed available.
As for cities, the first to be able to proceed in this direction will be New York, with the use of online spaces ending in “.nyc”.
This is just the beginning: by 2014, many more cities will have sites with a precise indication already within the domain itself.
The issue will certainly raise problems when some domains could be purchased by individuals who only aim to resell them at a high price to legitimately interested companies.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has assured that it will monitor the situation and that in any case, legal recourse will be possible against the registrar, should there be proof of active involvement in the process of purchasing and therefore appropriating the domain.
In any case, removals will be processed quickly upon reporting abuses.
