The ESM-3100 is targeted to support telecom OEMs that develop packet-switched backplane systems such as media servers, gateways and softswitches. It features a host of advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols to optimize network traffic and has the I/O capacity and capabilities to eliminate the need for an external switch to handle advanced switching functions. The ESM-3100 includes integration of an industry-standard IPMI platform management controller. This integration eliminates the need for an external IPMI controller elsewhere in the chassis, thus conserving rack space and simplifying system designs. About the ESM-3100 The ESM-3100 serves a dual function in a packet-switched backplane: high-density Ethernet Layer 2/3 switch and an integrated IPMI platform management. It is a fully managed fast Ethernet Layer 2/3 switch with 24 10/100 BaseT link ports and four-Gigabit Ethernet up-links. The Gigabit up-links are configured with two optical ports on the front panel and two copper ports on the rear transition module (RTM), providing the ultimate flexibility for inter-system connection. The ESM-3100 supports numerous advanced Layer 2 protocols including GMRP for multicasting registration, VLAN, and link aggregation to optimize network traffic. The use of a Linux-based operating system in the ESM-3100's processor allows users to customize the advanced Layer 3 protocol support. The ESM-3100 supports the IPMI platform management of the chassis as well as providing access to additional general-purpose I/O lines via the RTM. These general-purpose I/O lines allow monitoring and controlling of the optional user-defined functions. The unique integration of platform management and switching ensures redundancy in platform management function when two ESM-3100s are used in a chassis.
